The Area

3 miles west of Barefoot is the historic Cinque Port town of Rye.

The one hour walk along the beach is listed in Britain’s Top 100 Walks but you can drive it in under 10 minutes. The town is breathtakingly beautiful with cobbled streets leading up to the 12th century church and citadel. Rye is full of great eateries and pubs (see food and drink) as well as interesting artisan shops, spas, art galleries and antique centres. It even has an indoor swimming pool, a wonderful Kino cinema in a converted school hall and a traditional sweet shop selling everything from sweet peanuts to evil mega sours. Rye has a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including a Jazz Festival, an Arts Festival, a Scallop Festival and the best Bonfire Night around.

At the bottom of the town lies Rye Harbour with a nature reserve open year round where dogs are welcome.

9 miles west and 20 minutes by car is Dungeness, Britain’s only desert and one of the largest shingle panoramas in the world. The landscape is apocalyptic but mesmerising with decaying fishing boats and innovative architecture, including houses built from old railway carriages, sitting side by side with two lighthouses, a miniature steam railway and a nuclear power station. Dungeness is truly one of a kind and definitely worth a visit.

Further afield the choice of day trips is endless with vineyards at Tenterden, wine cellars at Winchelsea, castles at Bodiam and Dover, gardens at Great Dixter and the award winning Jerwood Gallery at Hastings, which also boasts an Aquarium. With all these places and more besides well within an hour of Camber, if you can drag yourself from the beach, the world really is your oyster.
